The construction and building sector is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases. In this study, we calculated the material used in shell construction in the German building sector from 2012 to 2020 using material flow analysis. Subsequently, the annual greenhouse gas emissions in the German building sector were simulated using the environmental product declarations from the Ökobaudat database and the modeled materials. We can show that biogenic materials account for an ever-larger share of value creation and are growing disproportionately. We can also show that by increasing biogenic materials, construction is becoming lighter and more efficient, and greenhouse gas emissions of shell construction are reduced during this period. In summary, the building sector in Germany still has very high greenhouse gas emissions of around 26 million metric tons of CO2 eq. Still, it is in a better overall position than at the beginning of the study period, thanks to the efficient use of available resources.

Genomic studies often attempt to link natural genetic variation with important phenotypic variation. To succeed, robust and reliable phenotypic data, as well as curated genomic assemblies, are required. Wild sunflowers, originally from North America, are adapted to diverse and often extreme environments and have historically been a widely used model plant system for the study of population genomics, adaptation, and speciation. Moreover, cultivated sunflower, domesticated from a wild relative (Helianthus annuus) is a global oil crop, ranking fourth in production of vegetable oils worldwide. Public availability of data resources both for the plant research community and for the associated agricultural sector, are extremely valuable. We have created HeliantHOME (http://www.helianthome.org), a curated, public, and interactive database of phenotypes including developmental, structural and environmental ones, obtained from a large collection of both wild and cultivated sunflower individuals. Additionally, the database is enriched with external genomic data and results of genome-wide association studies. Finally, being a community open-source platform, HeliantHOME is expected to expand as new knowledge and resources become available.

Bio-based products represent a promising alternative to fossil-based products and contribute to reduce negative environmental consequences caused by the latter. As consumer behavior is crucial for market penetration of bio-based products, this review analyses the current state of the art in consumer research on bio-based products and aims to identify research gaps and future research needs. This review is based on a systematic synthesis of 59 scientific journal articles and one book chapter on consumer studies related to bio-based products. Peer-reviewed studies in English language, with a research focus on consumer issues related to bio-based products of plant origin, that aim to replace fossil resources, have been included in the review. Most reviewed studies investigated bio-based plastics and composites, used a quantitative research approach, have been based on established consumer theories and used non-probability sampling techniques. While consumer preferences and attitudes, conviction as well as knowledge and perception related to bio-based products were focus of many reviewed studies, consumer awareness, liking and purchasing of bio-based products have been studied rarely or not at all. The results show that many consumers are not aware of the existence of bio-based products, related knowledge is low, and labels and brands are often unknown. Additionally, some consumers have wrong assumptions about the environmental impact of bio-based materials. Consumer preferences vary between product groups, but often factors like price or functionality are more important than bio-based materials. High purchase intentions and an increased willingness to pay are found e.g. for bio-based packaging products, disposable products and plant containers (in particular for female and environmentally-concerned consumers). The review identifies important research gaps and conclusions for future research needs such as e.g., to realize more studies in countries of the global south, analyze actual purchase behavior and the regional supply situation related to bio-based products.

Public acceptance of agricultural technologies is an important determinant of their success. In the case of autonomous crop robots, recent research from Germany suggests that societal acceptance of the technology plays an important role for farmer acceptance of crop robots. Yet little research has been conducted so far into how the public perceives autonomous agricultural technologies like crop robots. Investigating the public’s opinion on crop robots will provide answers to one of farmers’ questions in the decision to invest in crop robots. Through consumer segmentation and hypotheses-based characterization, specific consumer groups with differing attitudes towards crop robots are identified. Two discrete choice experiments on digital and autonomous methods of weed management (n = 675) and tractor size and degree of autonomy (n = 645), conducted as part of a larger representative consumer survey in Germany (n = 2,012), are submitted to a Hierarchical Bayes estimation and subsequent latent class analysis. The identified consumer segments are characterized in a hypotheses-based approach with hypotheses centering on consumer attitudes measured as 5-point Likert-type items and as spontaneous image associations. Both subsamples can be segmented into three groups, which are comparable between the experiments in their socio-economic composition. Results suggest that the German public is largely positively inclined towards autonomous agricultural technologies. The method of weed control is considered more important than the vehicle type (i.e., conventional tractor or crop robot) and vehicle size is considered more important than degree of autonomy. Only the respective smallest consumer segments in the two experiments indicate indifference or a more conservative perspective. Participants’ attitude towards environmental preservation appears to have a positive influence on their evaluation of autonomous agricultural technologies. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first investigation into the public opinion of crop robots, based on a large sample representative of the German population in four socio-demographic variables. It indicates that the German population is most interested in the reduction of agrochemicals in plant production and will also accept autonomous agricultural technologies to achieve this goal. Policymakers should make use of these insights when communicating about novel technologies in agriculture and extension agents should relay this information to farmers, particularly those already interested in investing in crop robots.
