In June, 80 participants from various countries gathered at the HSWT for the Alumni SDG Project (Sustainable Development Goals) to expand their expertise in the field of sustainable development. The project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It aims to strengthen the skills of alumni, promote professional networks and support the transfer of knowledge and cooperation with German institutions.

The programme comprised two parts: Firstly, the participants visited the trade fairs "The Smarter E Europe" and "Intersolar", where they were able to find out about advances in renewable energy and smart technology solutions, followed by two days at the HSWT campuses in Freising and Triesdorf.

At the Weihenstephan campus, Prof Dr Carsten Lorz, Vice President for International Affairs and Diversity, welcomed the 80 international guests before they explored the campus: This included a visit to the HSWT Incubation Centre under the management of Dr Veronika Hannus, an exploration of the Smart Indoor Farming facilities with Prof. Heike Susanne Mempel and a comprehensive tour of the Institute for Food Technology, led by Prof. Özlem Özmutlu-Karslioglu.

The following day, the participants travelled to the Triesdorf campus. There they were given an insight into the milk production centre and the biogas plant. These visits offered practical insights into modern dairy farming, sustainable agricultural practices and the use of renewable energy in modern Agriculture.

After the first week together, which was organised by HSWT, the group split into four parts and travelled to the universities in Siegen, Kassel, Leipzig and HSWT in Triesdorf. Each university organised a one-week workshop. The group, which was supervised by HSWT, took part in a seminar on "Digitalisation of Agriculture: Smart & Precision Farming", organised by Dr Bernd Müller and Anis Dzankovic. This seminar included a series of lectures and practical activities, including visits to local farms and companies to observe precision farming techniques, as well as seminars on digital solutions in dairy production, precision farming technologies and applications of near-infrared spectroscopy.

Participants were introduced to both theoretical knowledge and practical applications to ensure a comprehensive understanding of how digital technologies can improve Agriculture productivity and sustainability. The programme successfully established new professional networks and strengthened existing ones, fostering ongoing collaboration and knowledge sharing among alumni.

The Alumni SDG project at HSWT not only strengthened the skills of the participants, but also emphasised the University's commitment to promoting sustainable development through innovative Agriculture practices. We look forward to continuing this important work in future programmes.
