"Food Chains in Agriculture" 2024: Honoured by BayWa Foundation

25 African experts learnt methodological basics about Agriculture value chains and developed project ideas for a business model in their countries.

From 14 May to 11 July 2024, the course participants from 10 African countries acquired basic knowledge online about value chain management, project management and agricultural policy, among other things. In July 2024, they then travelled to the Triesdorf campus for two months to complete the practical part of the course. This included workshops, excursions to successful farms and to companies in the agricultural sector - including professional and personal networking. At the end of the course, the participants travelled to Vienna for the international Tropentag conference, which was held this year under the motto "Explore opportunities... for managing natural resources and a better life for all" to present their projects.

BayWa Foundation honours promising projects

As in previous years, the BayWa Foundation honoured the best projects. Sarah Rauch from the BayWa Foundation and Anja Weber from the HSWT International School presented the prizes. The following five projects were honoured for their feasibility and potential positive impact on the respective countries:

  • Mary Manong'a, Malawi - "Establishing a Biomass Briquette Processing Enterprise in Dowa, Malawi" (3,000 Euros)
  • Mark Umunna Amadi, Nigeria - "Setting-up a Demonstration Farm for Irrigated Maize Production using Organic Agricultural Practices" (3,000 Euros)
  • Dowantiga Souma Batomba Ragouena, Togo - "Production of Cubes with Oyster Mushrooms and Spices in Togo" (3,000 Euros)
  • Ahlem Masghouni, Tunisia - "AEARTH'na - Organic Smart Own Picking of Red Fruits" (3,000 Euros)
  • Grendah Mpundu Kabunda, Zambia - "Establish a Poultry Hatchery, Processing and Marketing Hub in Monze district-Southern Zambia" (3,000 Euros)

During the closing event on 5 September, Dr Bernd Müller and Anja Weber paid tribute to the commitment of the participants. Project manager Prof. Dr Ralf Schlauderer emphasised the motivation and commitment of the group during the five months of training and thanked the course participants for their discipline and perseverance. The course participants themselves also emphasised the support of the organisation team and the lecturers and encouraged their fellow students to pass on the knowledge they had acquired and to maintain friendships.

Training pact with Africa

The further education course "Food Chains in Agriculture" is part of the "Training Pact with Africa", which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented as part of the global project "Green Innovation Centres in the Agriculture and Food Sector" (GIAE) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) .
