I consider a sound basic knowledge of botany and ecology to be an essential foundation for working on interesting questions in higher semesters. This basic knowledge also includes a good knowledge of regional habitats and their flora. Based on this, it is possible to deal with vegetation on the one hand and the ecological processes and influences of use that control its dynamics on the other. Already in the development of the recording and analysis methods, the students should be oriented towards typical applied subject-specific questions. Getting to know ecosystems of at least one other region besides the native flora and vegetation can greatly contribute to the understanding of ecological patterns and processes.
Parallel to the acquisition of subject knowledge, important techniques such as working with GIS and statistical analysis should be taught. The most important thing for me is to recognise the possibilities and limitations of different analytical methods, as this forms the basis for critically assessing one's own and other people's research results.
