The Schlachters Experimental Station for Pomiculture: Research in Sweet
Today's research station was founded over a hundred years ago as the Royal Bavarian School of Fruit and Viticulture. It was the training and further education centre for fruit, wine and Horticulture in the Lake Constance region, which is famous for its fruit. Today, the experimental station for fruit growing in Sigmarszell on Lake Constance is another university site of the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences, alongside the Weihenstephan Campus, the Triesdorf Campus and the Straubing location.
The experimental station located in the Lindau district is organisationally assigned to the Institute of Horticulture and conducts practical tests in the field of pome fruit research on an area of around 8 hectares. The research topics range from further development of sustainable production methods in fruit growing, as well as the regulation of diseases and pests in cultivation practice, and the sustainable use of water in production to the preservation of endangered, regional apple and pear varieties. Students of Horticulture benefit from the practical teaching opportunities.
Combining fruit growing with field research
The focal points of research at the Institute of Horticulture, whose focus is on horticultural value chains, are flanked by work in the experimental station and offer students of the Department of Horticulture and Food Technology a variety of opportunities for internships and theses. Whether it is production and quality management, sustainability strategies and resource conservation or digitalisation in Horticulture, the theoretical principles can be put into practice at the experimental station for fruit growing.
Aside from farms in the Lake Constance region, farms throughout Bavaria also benefit from the results: for the approximately 200 family farms in the 800-ha Bavarian fruit-growing area at Lake Constance, the experimental station offers a meeting place for information and exchange.

Other Horticulture Institutions of the HSWT
The Institute of Horticulture is closely networked with other institutions within the HSWT. These topics are certainly also of interest to those interested in Horticulture.
